Linen-backed, dissected and folding. Mottled green card covers with a miniature outline map of the area and the ticket of Roake & Varty, Stationers, 31, Strand. Housed in a matching slip case. 20 1/4″ x 25 1/4″. Original hand colouring. At a scale of two statute miles to 1″.

A detailed and superbly engraved map in fine original hand colouring. Cary’s Improved Map of England and Wales comprises 65 sheets and covers an area of approximately 236 sq. feet when laid out. N.B. A complete set, dissected and boxed, of all 65 maps, title page, index, etc. is being sourced and should be available shortly.

At some point in the past the map has been carefully laid on card ; there is some light marginal discolouration in places and some tears to the edges.

Somewhat loosely depicted but not without charm; a strong impression of a good, attractively coloured example. With the arms of Conyers D’Arcy carrying an inconspicuous printer’s crease.

Somewhat loosely depicted but not without charm; a strong impression, well coloured. Dedicated to Charles, Lord Fairfax.

A fine, untouched example from one of the most influential atlases of the eighteenth century showing, amongst other features, post stages and Roman roads and stations. The map also shows ‘by Concentrick Circles, the distances of all places in the County from the City of York’.

A fine example from one of the most influential atlases of the eighteenth century showing, amongst other features, post stages, turnpike roads and the remains of Roman roads. There is an inset view of Kingston upon Hull and an epitomised map of the East Riding. The map is bordered by ‘Historical Extracts relating to its Natural produce, Mines, Minerals, Manufactures, Trade, etc.’ A clean split to the base of the centre fold has been repaired.

The map corresponds to Hodson State d ( County Atlases of the British Isles Vol.iii p.26 by Donald Hodson ). It bears plate no.41 bottom left margin and features a view of St. Peter’s Cathedral York. A fine example.

The first plate (no.98) of two from the uncommon French edition of Kitchin’s Post-Chaise Companion of 1767 – itself based on An Actual Survey of all the Principal Roads by John Senex 1719 – which was, in its turn, copied from John Ogilby’s Britannia of 1675.

Hull

Saved some years ago from a damaged copy of Speed’s map of the North and East Ridings of Yorkshire. It shows no less than six windmills, Henry VIII’s castle and fortifications (demolished in the mid 19c) and what appears to be a lone boat builder outside the north gate. The left hand margin has been extended to facilitate framing.

Steel engraving with original wash hand colouring to the map and a large uncoloured vignette of York Minster to bottom left. 23 3/4″ x 29 3/4″. Some light dusting to page edges and two small spots. A little very pale offsetting. A good example.
