A very good example from one of the most influential atlases of the eighteenth century, showing, amongst other features, water mills, ferries, navigable rivers, ‘coal pitts’ and gentleman’s houses. The map is bordered by ‘Historical Extracts relative to the Air, Soil, Natural Produce; also some account of its Trade and Manufactures.’ Dedicated to Thos. Morgan Esq. ‘His Majesty’s Lieut. & Custos Rotulorem’. Remargined as usual.

A clearly engraved map of the island. The map illustrates (but doesn’t name) Thomas Telford’s Menai Suspension Bridge and Stanley Embankment, both of which were critical components of his state-funded modernisation of the London to Holyhead road completed in 1826.

Cornwal Devonshyre
Engraved by William Hole for the 1622 edition of Poly-Olbion by Michael Drayton. Copper engraving. 9 5/8″ x 12 7/8″. An untitled map showing Cornwall, Devonshire and the (somewhat misplaced) Channel Islands.

Poly-Olbion was a book of “song poems” by the poet Michael Drayton celebrating the countryside, illustrated with vibrant, allegorical maps based on river systems. They show nymphs, shepherds, peasants, some topographical detail such as hills, forests and larger towns and – in this example – sea monsters, amorous neptunes and naked dancers.

Flint-Shire
Performed by John Speed. from his Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine 1676. later hand colouring. 15 1/4″ x 20 1/4″.

Based on Saxton’s mapping of 1577. Illustrated with plans of St.Asaph and Flint and a view of St. Winifrid’s Well and embellished with sea monsters and galleons. Notwithstanding two restored paper cracks, an attractive and well coloured example. To the reverse there is a history of the county and a list of parishes.
