Cestria Cester
by Rutgerus Hermannides. published in Britannia Magna 1661. 4 3/8″ x 5 1/8″.

Although published in Europe,Britannia Magna was the first book of plans of British towns and cities. This ‘bird’s eye’ plan of Chester is based on that of John Speed, first published in 1611 as an inset to his map of Cheshire.
Cestria vulgo Chester
by Francesco Valegio c.1595. published Alphonsi Lasor a Varea in Universus Terrarum Orbis 1713. 3 1/2″ x 5 1/4″.
Chester in Engelland
by Daniel Meisner. first published in the Thesaurus Philo-Politicus 1623. 3 3/4″ x 6″.

A strong and finely detailed impression of a miniature prospect of Chester. A combination the allegorical imagery and the verse appears to suggest the city’s character.
City and University of Oxford.
engraved by James Bingley. from The English Counties Delineated by Thomas Moule c.1837. later hand colouring. 9 3/4″ x 7 1/2″.

A highly detailed, finely engraved and carefully coloured plan embellished with the arms of the Town, the University and its colleges and views of Christchurch College and Oxford itself. Some very pale marginal discolouration easily overmountable.
City of Bath.
from The English Counties Delineated by Thomas Moule c.1837. later hand colouring. 10 1/2″ x 7 3/4″.

A highly detailed, finely engraved and carefully coloured plan embellished with coats of arms and a view of the Guildhall and Abbey. Slightly shaved at the top with some small marginal tears not affecting the engraved area.

A detailed, carefully engraved plan with an inset view of the Prebends Bridge and Durham Cathedral.
Edenburgum Scotiae Metropolis ( Edenburgh )
from Civitates Orbis Terrarum by Braun & Hogenberg 1575-1612. 13 1/2″ x 18″. contemporary hand colouring. French text verso.

Derived from a view in Holinshed’s Chronicles c.1574. A little marginal discolouration and some small abrasions to the early paintwork – nonetheless a good example.
Guildford
lithographed by J.Greig. published by Longman & Co. 1822. 6″ x 8 3/8″. later hand colouring.
Hartforde
by John Speed. from his map of Hertfordshire c.1627. 3 3/4″ x 5 3/4″. later hand colouring.

The only plan of Hertford to show the castle in its entirety; from Stuart times it fell out of favour as a royal residence and all that now remains is the gatehouse and some ruined walling.
Hull
engraved by Jodocus Hondius. by John Speed c.1627. later hand colouring. 5 7/8″ x 6 1/8″.

Saved some years ago from a damaged copy of Speed’s map of the North and East Ridings of Yorkshire. It shows no less than six windmills, Henry VIII’s castle and fortifications (demolished in the mid 19c) and what appears to be a lone boat builder outside the north gate. The left hand margin has been extended to facilitate framing.
Hull.
by Robt. K. Dawson Lieut. R.E. from Plans of the Cities and Boroughs of England and Wales pub. London 1832. 7 3/4″ x 11 1/8″. lithographed with later hand colouring.

Surveyed by Robt. Cooper of York under Dawson’s supervision, following the Reform Bill of 1831 and the Boundaries Act of 1832, at a scale of 2″ to the mile.
New Map of the City and University of Oxford
From Walks in Oxford published by R.Pearson Oxford 1817. 15 1/2″ x 17 1/4″. later hand colouring.

Backed onto linen to stabilise splits to old folds and tiny points of loss. Nonetheless an interesting, uncommon and informative plan offered at less than half its normal price.

Saved some years ago from a damaged copy of Speed’s map of Northamptonshire and almost certainly based on John Norden’s earlier survey. Wash-line mounted.
