A Map of Sussex

by Emmanuel Bowen. published in Britannia Depicta 1720-1764.  7 1/4" x 4 3/4" ( to include additional decorative title 'The Road from London to Arundel'). verso is the road from Riadergowy to Aberistwith. Attractive hand colouring.

Britannia Depicta was one of a number of reduced versions of Ogilby's monumental 1675 survey of the roads of England and Wales, issued in the early eighteeth century. It was the only one however, to include county maps as well as road maps and proved extremely popular. Sussex air is 'generally thick & foggy, yet 'tis not reckon'd unhealthy' and amongst its produce is noted 'Arundel Mullet', 'Chichester Lobster' and 'Amerley Trout'.
