Britannia Depicta was one of a number of reduced versions of Ogilby’s monumental 1675 survey of the roads of England and Wales, issued in the early eighteeth century. It was the only one however, to include county maps as well as road maps and proved extremely popular. Tha air of Northumberland is ‘ sharp and piercing ‘ and it has a ‘ great plenty of coal ‘.

engraved by John Lodge. from an anonymous atlas published in 1795 made up of maps previously issued separately in the Political Magazine between 1782 and 1790. 12 5/8″ x 10 3/8″.

Uncommon. All references to Lodge and the Political Magazine have been removed. Two soft creases to the right hand corners and a little marginal strengthening. Shows the ‘Scots Dike’ and the ‘Picts Wall’ as well as the ‘Devils Causway’, ‘Wheel Causway’ and the ‘Maiden Way’.

by C. & J. Greenwood. published January 26, 1831 by Greenwood & Co. London. Steel engraving with fine fresh original wash hand colouring to the map and a large  uncoloured vignette of Alnwick Castle to top left.  23 1/2″ x 24 1/4″.  Some light dusting to page edges and a small pale mark in the adjacent county of Berwickshire. A very good example.

A clearly engraved, attractively coloured map showing ‘every Parish and Place containing upwards of 40 Houses’, numbers of inhabitants, houses and acreages. Although this map is from the 1813 edition it retains the the imprint of R.Philips, Bridge Street, Blackfriars and the original date of publication of 1808; it is, however, a most unusual example in that, contrary to most sources, the engraver’s name has been removed.
