A fine, untouched example showing, amongst others, post stages, religious houses and charity schools. We also discover that the market at Uppingham is ‘reckon’d preferable to that of Oakham’ and of Melton Mowbray: ‘Here are frequent Horse Races’. The map corresponds to Hodson State b ( County Atlases of the British Isles Vol.iii p.23 by Donald Hodson ). There is no plate number.

First edition. Features a plan of Leicester and a view of the opposing armies at the Battle of Bosworth as well as pinpointing ‘Kinge Richards feild’; the defeated King is held to be buried at Leicester. It is testimony to Speed’s original conception and design that his maps still present attractively. Some pale age toning and vestiges of a soft horizontal fold. To the reverse there is a history of the county and a list of parishes.

Although this map is from the 1813 edition it retains the the imprint of R.Philips, Bridge Street, Blackfriars and the original date of publication of 1808; it is, however, a most unusual example in that, contrary to most sources, the engraver’s name has been removed.
