A New Map of Huntingdonshire
by John Cary Engraver 1818. from Cary’s New English Atlas published by J.Cary Engraver & Map seller 1818. 21 1/4″ x 19″. fine original wash hand colouring.

Shows the five large meres: Trundle, Brik, Ugg, Ramsey and the largest, Whittlesea, which extended to around 3000 acres – plus Benwick Mere, just over the border in Cambridgeshire. By the mid nineteenth century all were under the plough. A few very faint creases do not detract from a beautifully engraved and coloured example from one of the finest map makers of his day.
Huntingdon
by Benjamin Pitts Capper. engraved by H.Cooper. published in A Topographical Dictionary of the United Kingdom. printed for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme and Brown Paternoster Row London 1813. 7 ” x 4 “. contemporary wash hand colouring.

A clearly engraved, attractively coloured map of Huntingdonshire showing ‘ every parish and place containing upwards of 20 houses ‘ as well as numbers of inhabitants, houses and acreages. Although this map is from the 1813 edition it retains the the imprint of R.Philips, Bridge Street, Blackfriars and the original date of publication of 1808; it is, however, a most unusual example in that, contrary to most sources, the engraver’s name has been removed.
