from Reuben Ramble’s Travels through the Counties of England. published by Darton and Clark London 1845. 7 3/4″ x 6″. The miniature map is a lithographic re-issue of that published in Miller’s New MIniature Atlas of 1810. The vignettes of Durham scenes have original wash hand colouring.

Uncommon. From a children’s atlas and therefore not often found in good condition; comes with 2pp of related text. Particularly interesting for its depiction of mining practices. A little discolouration to lower margin not affecting image.

An attractively coloured miniature map highlighting turnpike roads and mail coach roads aligned with north to the right. The map also shows Greatham Hospital – the site of a 13c charity founded to help the sick and poor and still in existence today.

Somewhat loosely engraved but not without charm; a strong impression of a good, untouched example.
A new map of the county of Durham ..

The very rare first printing by Robert Rowe of a clear, detailed and visually appealing map of the county subsequently published, in its engraved form, by Henry Teesdale between 1829 and 1842, and lithographically, by Henry George Collins and B.Clarke between 1848 and 1852.

A clearly engraved, attractively coloured map showing ‘ every parish and place containing upwards of 40 houses ‘ as well as numbers of inhabitants, houses and acreages. Although this map is from the 1813 edition it retains the the imprint of R.Philips, Bridge Street, Blackfriars and the original date of publication of 1808; it is, however, a most unusual example in that, contrary to most sources, the engraver’s name has been removed.

A fine example of a clear, concise miniature map of the county from an immensely popular little atlas that ran into at least fourteen editions between 1790 and 1828. Its success, along with that of his New and Correct English Atlas and New English Atlas, stamped Cary as the foremost map maker of the pre-Ordnance Survey era.

Steel engraving with fine fresh original wash hand colouring to the map and a large uncoloured vignette of Durham Cathedral to bottom left. 23 3/4″ x 27 1/2″. Two inset maps of parts of Durham situated in the adjacent counties of Northumberland and the North Riding of Yorkshire. Some light dusting to blank margins. A very good example.

Some strengthening and small repairs to the top and bottom of the centrefold notwithstanding, a sound example. Interestingly this particular map bears no mention of Speed’s name.
