A New Map of Derby Shire

from an Actual Survey by P.P.Burdett and Improved by John Andrews. printed for R.Wilkinson London. published as the Act directs 7 Sep. 1786. 28 1/2" x 20 1/4". original outline hand colouring.

A scarce reduction of Peter Perez Burdett's one inch to the mile survey of the county published in 1767 - noted by Dickinson as 'probably the most historically valuable map of Derbyshire ever issued' ( The Mapping of Derbyshire by James Dickinson 2007 ). A pencil note verso suggests a publication date of 1789 - the map shows the line of the Cromford Canal, opened 1792/3, which does not appear on Burdett's large scale map until its re-publication by George Snowden in 1791. Close cut with several inconspicuous marginal tears.
