British Isles.
by Benjamin Pitts Capper. engraved by H.Cooper. published in A Topographical Dictionary of the United Kingdom. printed for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme and Brown Paternoster Row London 1813. 8 3/8 ” x 7 “. contemporary wash hand colouring.

A clearly engraved, attractively coloured map. Although this map is from the 1813 edition it retains the the imprint of R.Philips, Bridge Street, Blackfriars and the original date of publication of 1808; it is, however, a most unusual example in that, contrary to most sources, the engraver’s name has been removed. Traces of old folds.
England Scotland and Ireland
Engraved by Pieter van den Keere. published 1620-76. 4 7/8″ x 6 1/4″. later hand colouring.

An attractive, interesting miniature map featuring some unusual towns for such a small scale map : for example S.Lees (St.Ives Cornwall), Sturbrig (Stourbridge Worcestershire), Stopfort (Stockport Cheshire), Wulsty (Wulsty Castle Cumberland) and Waldeswik (Walberswick Suffolk). Conversely it doesn’t show Bristol, St.Albans, Lichfield or Derby. Old folds have been strengthened verso and margins extended to facilitate framing.
Geological Map of Great Britain
by Stanford’s Geographical Establishment London. 7″ x 4″. printed colour.
Les Isles Britanniques
By Pierre vander Aa (Pieter van der Aa) and published Leiden early 18c. 10 1/4″ x 15″ to include wide decorative borders to three edges. later hand colouring.

A very good example of a reduced version of the great French cartographer Guillaume de L’Isle’s larger map published at the turn of the century. It shows a number of underwater features in the North Sea and reiterates de L’Isle’s well-founded doubts concerning the mythical islands of Assmanda and Brasil shown on earlier maps off the west coast of Ireland. The title cartouche is illustrated with a bearded, trident-wielding sea god seated on a large sea shell chariot pulled by two horses and led by dolphins. There is a prospect of London and the River Thames in the background. The lower margin has been extended.
Li Regni D’Inghilterra e D’Irlanda
by Antonio Zatta 1776. 11 3/4″ x 15 3/4″. old wash hand colouring.
Magnae Britanniae et Hiberniae Tabula
by Willem Blaeu. First published in 1631 in Blaeu’s Atlantis Appendix and later in the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum 1645-1662. Fine original hand colouring. 15 3/8″ x 19 3/4″. Latin text verso indicates a publication date of 1648 or 1662.

An excellent example notwithstanding a faint printer’s crease in the top right-hand corner. One of only five of the fifty-nine maps relating to the British Isles to be signed ( Guiljemus Blaeuw excudit ) by a member of the Blaeu family. NB : Although this item is sold out a similar example may be available shortly.
